“I don’t go out looking for objects much anymore, because people come to me. The dialogue sort of goes like this: They’re driving along. They see this pile of shit. “And I thought about you.” [laughs] And they stop and they put it in the trunk of their car and then they bring it to me, and they throw open the trunk of the car, and I have to kind of bow and say, “Ah, thank you very much, thank you very much.” But they’ve missed the point, that it’s that joy of discovery that’s so important to a worker with found objects. And so what I do is then I try to take this gift, stash it somewhere in my storage or my studio, and let months go by, years go by, and then one day I’m plowing through things and I get the joy of discovery.” — George Herms, interviewed by Paul J.
